The Benefits of Automating Business Procedures

Business process automation (BPA) is “”¦technologically augmented procedures and/or automation of specific activities or services that achieve a designated result, function or workflow that is enhanced by technology. Following sufficient analysis, enterprise processes can be streamlined for the benefit of such enterprise segments as marketing, management, operations, supply chain, human resources and information technology.”

A business process is often started by a trigger, such as a sales or marketing person’s filing of an order which, in turn, initiates a set of predefined workflow steps.  When the process is finished, the product has been delivered or the service has been completed and another trigger ends the process. The goal of BPA is not only to simplify and accelerate business activities, but it is also to simplify and improve business workflows as well. BPA can be a standalone initiative or part of a larger, overarching business process management (BPM) strategy.

Within BPM, automated business processes are managed collectively to improve an organization’s overall workflow in terms of achieving greater efficiency, adapting to changing business needs, reducing human error and clarifying job roles and responsibilities. BPM is itself a subset of infrastructure management, which maintains and optimizes an organization’s core operational components such as processes, equipment and data.  See: http://tinyurl.com/cpowooo

With respect to an organization’s information technology assets, infrastructure management (IM) is responsible for managing essential operation components, such as policies, processes, equipment, data, human resources, and external contacts, for overall effectiveness.

Further, infrastructure management is sometimes divided into categories of systems management, network management and storage management. SAP IT Infrastructure Management is a solution for acquiring and administrating all IT components in an infrastructure including PCs, printers, servers, routers and so on. Considerable advantages of this management solution include the agentless collection of the infrastructure data of all components within an IT landscape and being able to perform comprehensive monitoring without needing to install any agents.

The collected data are stored in a so-called Configuration Management Database (CMDB) which provides the basis for IT service management in accordance with the ITIL. The integrated CMDB allows seamless and transparent infrastructure visibility in SAP and non-SAP environments. Complete system and device information on the relevant IT is furnished and correlated for incident and change management as well as for monitoring and alerting. The automatic detection of all active components and the normalization of data form the basis for complete IT service management.
