The Mobile Trend

In the last few years, many business leaders focused on social media, application integration, customer analytics and ecommerce remarketing. When the mobile shopping craze recently exploded within the online marketplace, many enterprise leaders adjusted their business plans to include mobile commerce capabilities. The organizations which had not implemented mobile commerce were simply not as competitive. Many ecommerce businesses lost sales to competitors which provided positive shopping experiences on mobile devices.

It is estimated that 82.2 million people are currently smartphone users. So, it should be no surprise that each day more and more people use their mobile phones for shopping in contrast to a portable PC or a tablet PC. However, many “grey hairs” in the field have been (a) very surprised by a so-called “explosion” in traffic originated via smartphones and (b) even more surprised larger increases in the volume of orders via tablets.

Some pundits suggest that it would be wise for ecommerce site owners to  recognize that the rapid increase in mobile device sales and usage will demand a very significant transition for which they must be prepared. In turn, that means site owners would be well advised to “fine tune” related online business practices and procedures so as to assure smooth sailing this year. For example, as the volume of orders placed via mobile devices increases, more and more orders will be placed after “normal” business hours.  Failure to adapt to that pnenomenon equates to lost revenues.

One pundit said that he considers the mobile phenomenon to be “a cultural shift.” Previously, most orders placed through webstores reached e-commerce sites in daytime. Each customer was at his/her computer at work placing his/her order during the lunch hour or during a work “break”. Additional orders are placed at times that would seem to correspond with the time customers have probably returned from work and are “sitting on the couch with an iPad.” He and others in the field note that there has been (a) an “explosion in traffic coming from smartphones” and (b) “an even bigger explosion in the rate of orders coming from tablets”. They characterize the development as “as a cultural shift”. They also note that, in the not so distant past, most orders used to arrive at ecommerce sites during the day. Further, it was well recognized that the orders were placed by folks at their desks during their lunch hour or while they were supposed to be working.
