Value of Information Systems: Business Intelligence Is As Important A Venture As Capital

In today’s business and economic environment it is hard to refute the proposition that information might well be as important to a venture as is capital.  The lack of sufficient, current and accurate data can be just as damaging as the lack of sufficient equity, borrowing capacity and/or readily available cash.  Not so long ago, the Information Systems Department’s role was typically thought to be one of the support elements in a business venture.

Now, the IS Department’s status has risen apace with the general acceleration of the entire business/commerce milieu due to that Department’s ever increasing power to amass, analyze and distribute information.  That is not to say that all information systems perform at their highest potential. Those that have the best configurations for the tasks at hand are demonstrably more effective than those “one size fits all” systems. Thus, it is axiomatic that the optimally configured systems are very likely to be more cost-effective and, therefore, will become an even more valuable strategic resource.

It is not an exaggeration to say that most small and mid-sized business ventures should find that they can use IS to create and continuosly improve their competitive advantage. There seems to be a growing consensus that IS departments are, justifiably and consistently, elevating their standing as very important factors in the success and growth of the enterprises they serve.  Inasmuch as (1) the relevant “tech” equipment steadily shrinks in size while increasing in capabilities and (2) the SAP small and mid-sized business software should  not burden the typical tech equipment used by such ventures, it seems likely that SAP will retain it’s prominence in the field.

Very recently, SAP introduced “”¦new business intelligence (BI) innovations that bring customers richer business insights. Now generally available, feature pack 3 for the 4.0 release of SAP® BusinessObjectsâ„¢ BI solutions ““ including SAP BusinessObjects BI, Edge edition, software ““ and the 1.0.1 release of SAP® Visual Intelligence software let organizations equip users with powerful analytics tools that are easy to access and use.

The latest examples of SAP’s continued innovation across its key BI pillars, today marks the general availability of feature pack 3 for the 4.0 release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions ““ including SAP BusinessObjects BI, Edge edition, for small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) ““ and the 1.0.1 release of SAP Visual Intelligence. The feature pack release for SAP® Crystal Server software is planned to be generally available this month”¦”

“New innovations in areas such as “˜big data,’ cloud, collaboration, mobile, predictive, social and visualization have helped create a renaissance for the entire BI industry,” said Howard Dresner, chief research officer, Dresner Advisory Services. “It’s an exciting time for BI, with bountiful opportunities for organizations and lines of business to arm users with unique insights that can improve decision-making processes and transform businesses.”
